Speaking to Nicolai Fjord Larsen, former Performance Coach from Team Kinguin, Origen and Supermassive, he expresses clearly which is the most common health-related challenge that pro-gamers in general face: the weight control. Although, this is not an issue faced only by professionals. Many of those who maintain a lifestyle involving long sessions of gameplay might have struggled to keep a healthy shape.
When speaking of losing weight, we automatically relate it to doing exercises and having a balanced alimentation. Those aren’t secrets to anyone who one day wanted to “shrink” a bit. The problem here is that gaming is basically the opposite of exercising, as you sit down and remain motionless while your brain does all the work with a little help from your hands, and even worse, some bad eating habits might come along with it. Thereover, this scenario has to be changed. Let’s do it?
Implementing exercises at the gameplay
Obviously, games like “Let’s Dance” or other motion-based titles are absolutely perfect for whoever is willing to get rid of some extra fat. But let’s assume that you are more fond of games that would stick you to a chair.
How about challenging yourself? Make yourself drills and fit them into the game that you are currently playing. Playing a turn-based game, how about doing some sit-ups every 5 turns? Or what about doing push-ups every time you die in-game while playing Dark Souls? Maybe not immediately after you die, but count how many times you do and, at the end of one or two hours of gameplay, you workout, alternating between push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, etc. It is guaranteed that some extra fat will go away, but if you hate exercising that much at least you will get better at the game, I guess…
Motivate and get motivated
The trick to any drill is to stay focused on your objective, and it is not always easy to keep it up. But guess what: you are not alone. Many gamers have the same struggle and concern. So find a buddy who you can count to charge you over your drills, and maybe for you to also do the other way around if that is necessary. This will give you both some extra fuel to keep up with the challenge, making it even funnier with the multiplayer gaming experience, doesn’t matter if it is local or online.
Eating the right stuff
Many gamers have the habit of keeping some snacks around while playing. These snacks obviously are one of the causes of the overweight, but as it may be even some kind of addiction, it might hard to suddenly stop doing it. In this case, you should consider throwing away your chips and start buying alternative snacks that will help with your objectives.
When asked, Nicolai Larsen was quick at his answer: nuts are the best option in this scenario. They will still keep your hands occupied, but won’t give you as many calories as chips or other fried snacks would. The Performance Coach also recommends blueberries for those who need some sugar in the body. “One blueberry can have up to the same amount of sugar as a gummy bear, but at least it is a good kind of sugar”, says Nicolai.
Nicolai also gives a curious tip for those who want to lose some weight: use smaller plates. If less food fits in it, you might start eating less. It happens because many eat a whole plate of food not for hunger, but simply because of the habit of having to see the plate empty.
Counting on some equipment
If you are in an urge to change your life and appearance as quickly as possible, you may count on an exercise bike to help with your objectives. Over the internet, it is possible to find many testimonials about how efficient it is to play games while using this equipment, which is absolutely affordable.
Although, if you have more money to spend you can look into some other alternatives like the ICAROS, a “flying machine” that makes you work out while playing their game with a Samsung Gear VR. People looking for different and exciting experiences will absolutely love it, but it is better to prepare a few thousand dollars if you are willing to have one of those at home.
